Andrew had the pleasure of joining with other SAIF members on Wednesday to discuss the coming amendments to the UK Funeral Directors code for SAIF Members. Paul Allcock and Joe Murren presented a brief history of how SAIF came to this point and the reason for changing the current Code of Practice, followed by a review of the changes and structure of the new Code of Practice.
In the UK there is no mandatory code of practice for funeral directors, however SAIF and NAFD are working with government departments to promote and progress this. As of March 2025, new, comprehensive Scottish funeral regulations are in force, introducing a mandatory Code of Practice for funeral directors, a new public-facing inspection regime, and a statutory online register for all burial and cremation authorities. These regulations ensure higher standards of care, transparency in pricing, and respectful treatment of the deceased.
SAIF was established in 1989 to support independent, mostly family owned funeral directors, they have over 1000 members across the United Kingdom and their roles include
Promoting best practice and protect the interests of our members and their local communities.
To provide training and education programmes to ensure members meet the highest of standards through the Independent Funeral Directors College.
Assuring Bereaved families of a compassionate, professional approach, underpinned by our industry leading Code of Practice
Inspecting Members against the Code of Practice SAIF Care bereavement support and a Consumer Protection Scheme
