Headstone and memorial lettering maintenance.

Refreshing lettering is the process of restoring worn, faded, or weathered inscriptions to make them legible and visually striking again. We carry this work out on a regular basis with families often wishing to have work completed for anniversaries and poignant events like easter, mother’s day, father’s day and Christmas.

Why inscriptions fade –

Different stones and finishes age in different ways. Granite is the most common stone used and keeps its definition for decades, while softer stones such as limestone or sandstone can lose detail quickly as rain, frost, and lichen gradually wear the surface.

The dept of letters in the stone and types of paint used can drastically affect the lifespan of finishes, shallower letters may need regular touch ups to maintain a desired look.

When to have an inscription refreshed – if you notice letters looking patchy, faded, or hard to make out in low light. If the paint is flaking, or gilding has thinned so much that the stone beneath is visible. on older stones, lead inlay may be loose or missing.

How we can help –

We will provide a no obligation estimate of costs with advice on the best course of action.

We remove dirt, moss, and lichen using safe, non-abrasive methods to avoid damaging the stone.

When the weather is suitable we repaint faded letters with numerous coats, using specialized enamel paint to restore contrast.

How long will new paint last? High quality enamel paint can last 8 to 15 years depending on the stone and location. Gold leaf, when applied correctly, can last much longer, often 20 years or more before needing attention.

Can you repaint yourself? DIY painting may cause more harm than good because unsuitable paints and brushes can damage the stone. Professional work ensures proper cleaning, preparation, and compliance with cemetery or churchyard rules.

Do I need permission to repaint inscriptions? Repainting existing letters is usually considered maintenance, but adding new wording often requires permission. Churchyards and council cemeteries have different rules, so it is always best to check before starting work.

What if the stone is too worn to be repainted? On stones in very poor content repainting may risk damaging the memorial further. In such cases, adding a new plaque or using a companion stone can be a better alternative.

Does weather affect work? Yes, paint needs dry conditions and suitable temperatures to cure properly. We often schedule this type of work during spring or summer for the best results.
